Durga Puja: Celebrating the Power of Good Over Evil

Durga Puja is one of the most vibrant and widely celebrated Hindu festivals, especially cherished by the Bengali community across the UK and around the world. This festival honors Goddess Durga, the divine mother and symbol of strength, courage, and victory over evil.

Why is Durga Puja Important?

Durga Puja commemorates the legendary battle between Goddess Durga and the demon Mahishasura, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. Beyond religious rituals, it’s a celebration of culture, community, and togetherness—values cherished deeply in the diaspora.

When and How is it Celebrated in the UK?

Durga Puja usually takes place over several days in September or October and involves:

  • Traditional rituals performed by priests, including prayers and offerings to the goddess

  • Beautifully crafted idols of Goddess Durga, displayed in elaborately decorated pandals (temporary festival structures)

  • Cultural programs showcasing Bengali music, dance, drama, and art that bring the community together

  • Festive food featuring traditional Bengali cuisine and sweets

  • Community gatherings where families, friends, and visitors of all backgrounds come together to celebrate heritage and shared values
