BIJOYA SAMMILANI
What We Do
Bijoya Sammilani
What is Bijoya Sammilani?
Bijoya Sammilani is a post-Durga Puja celebration
observed primarily by Bengali communities to mark the joyous conclusion of
Durga Puja and the spirit of togetherness, goodwill, and cultural bonding.
It’s not a religious ritual, but rather a social and
cultural gathering held after Vijaya Dashami (the last day of Durga Puja, when
Goddess Durga returns to her divine abode). The term “Bijoya” means “victory,”
symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, and “Sammilani” means “gathering” or
“reunion.”
Purpose and Significance
- Celebrate
the spirit of unity after the emotional farewell to Goddess Durga
- Reconnect
with community and friends
- Share
greetings, sweets, and good wishes for health, peace, and prosperity
- Preserve
and pass on Bengali cultural traditions, especially through music,
literature, and performing arts
It is customary to exchange greetings with the words:
"Shubho Bijoya" – meaning "Auspicious Victory" or
"Best wishes after Vijayadashami"
